Hey, guess what! Women aren't actually inherently better at multitasking or seeing mess or going without sleep. We just expect them to do it more.

As the daughter of a civil engineer, and someone who studies software, I LOVE this thread: software engineering compared to other engineering disciplines.

And from a purely mathematical POV, you can ask a few people in management/ BOD to fix this, or you can mentor hundreds of marginalized people to ask for equity (from a position of less power). Like this should not be hard to see.

Hey I advise mentoring all the time... but the implication that the responsibility for this falls on her alone (from your original comment of the word only “mentoring”) is misguided.

If you think asking people to be more ethical in how they think about equity distribution is being more ivory tower...? Then I just don’t even have an answer for you. And it’s a lazy straw man.

And to extend this: when men take paternity leave, actually help. I know too many who use the time to go golfing/ cycling or further their careers (the latter is particularly true in academia)... making it a huge problem for continued career progression.

And removing the option and the choice is the problem. She wasn’t even able to do that. Don’t excuse it away with statistical likelihood. This is on management.

No. Absolutely not. Don’t put the onus on the person getting screwed to know to fix this. Put the responsibility on management to not be A-holes when handing it out. They’re knew what they were doing.
