What's the advantage compared to RFC 2557 ("#MIME Encapsulation of Aggregate Documents, such as HTML (#MHTML)", tools.ietf.org/html/rfc2557) given that modern file systems already use transparent compression?

Try opening your MHTML file in any other browser than Chrome. The advantage you may consider as minor is that HTML works in any browser. This can be useful when you archive pages and want a guarantee you'll be able to open it in the future.
