Man an HOUR before I hop a plane to Cuba, I see a post from Franklin Veaux’s supposed β€œaccountability” pod which is: a) not an RJ/TJ pod at all b) dripping in overt & covert contempt, especially toward social justice work & survivors c) hyperbolic as hell πŸ™„

Don’t be fooled, folks. It is now more than abundantly clear that the work on Franklin’s end is not being done in any semblance of good faith or attempt at listening. It’s using some of the language of community accountability work without any of the substance.

Its tropes are tired, its language is skewing toward the criminolegal, & it is in no way prioritizing community, kindness, collaboration, transparency, restoration, or any of the other values the folks involved in the survivor team put forth.

People. It goes so far as to give a β€œslippery slope” signoff reminding people it was basically one tiny step between an accusation and the REIGN OF TERROR IN FRANCE, and how that is relevant here. I can’t stop simultaneously shaking my head and laughing at the GALL. This is WILD.

It’s also setting up its own β€œclaims review process” to fail (or rather to β€œwin” in their eyes); from the get go it’s using language/framing to discourage survivors coming fwd (once again, relying heavily on the very criminolegal outlook that REPEATEDLY FAILS on these issues).

Anyway. I had to say something before I hopped my plane because it’s vile and ridiculous and really sad. I’m only a consultant for the survivor team and I know HOW much effort, time, & resources have gone into this process.

There’s been SO much effort to be kind, compassionate, respectful with each other and even Franklin. It has been so hard and complex to juggle people’s needs, dynamics, & situations because to do this work & do it WELL, transformatively, that’s what it takes. It’s NOT quick/easy.

This post by his β€œpod” is a slap in the face to all that, & is once again a reliance on the same systems and rhetorics that over & over fail us as communities. We all deserve better. That’s why at least some of us are trying to DO better. It’s clear some aren’t on that mission πŸ˜”

But you know what? It’s okay. They can argue & punitive legalese all they want. Theirs has been the way for a long time but many of us are making it change little by little and even big bit by big bit. Their rhetoric and outlook isn’t new, and la lucha continΓΊa. We are strong.

And as I mentioned in another thread: I recommend reading & specifically the section that talks about black feminist epistemology: a good foundation to dislodge Eurocentric male models of producing change and knowledge. Why you ask?

Because it’s brilliant, but ALSO because FV’s pod is already pulling the β€œwe are the RATIONAL and UNBIASED ones” which is patently false. BUT an easy falsehood to swallow if you’re raised in a country like the U.S. so! Read that text & enjoy a pic of me presenting about it. πŸ’‹

Some key things to keep in mind? VALUES NEUTRALITY IS A MYTH. ✨everything every human does✨ is influenced by their explicit or implicit values. BEING UNBIASED IS A MYTH. The way to mitigate bias though is to engage in reflexivity & accounting for varied perspectives.

ALSO: FEELINGS & CONNECTIONS ARE CRITICAL IN JUSTICE WORK. Boasting about β€œnot being connected to FV” & being on his pod? That’s a weakness, NOT a strength. Connection itself isn’t a problem, it’s connection w/o reflexivity & structures to protect from undue influence.

The reason so many people, especially people occupying various dominant social positions, can be so allegedly unbiased and β€œclinical” and β€œremoved” is that their stake is made invisible &/or their life is NOT AS MEANINGFULLY ENTWINED with the question of justice.

It’s easy to opine from an armchair. It’s easy to be β€œlevelheaded” and β€œpresent a cool face” when you feel deeply removed from an issue. It’s an abstraction. A thought experiment. And that itself is twisted as a strength when it’s not. Again: refer to the PDF I linked earlier.

And you know what is extra wacky? There is simultaneous work in that Quora post to present a β€œlevelheaded & unbiased” persona while ALSO using veiled threats (as well as more overt) intimidation strategies. How people’s brains don’t explode from the cog dissonance is impressive.

And don’t even get me started on the paragraphs about his experience in governance, boards, & committees as a way to say β€œI Do Know What I am Doing And I Am Right.” You know what a KEY difference is between that bio snippet and the ones for the survivors team?

The survivor team is showing their credentials so people can see where their experience AND their biases are. So they can inspire confidence but also invite critique. So they can show their investment and connection to the issue. The quora post is the *exact opposite* of that.

Anyway. I’m shooting into the sky now on this plane so I leave you with two critical links: ✨ - the place where the initial cohort of survivor stories live & ✨ here is the Medium account for periodic pod updates & commentary:
