You know what would be great? The BBC should televise someone's wedding every Saturday. "And here's Kerry, arriving at the registry office in her father's mondeo. Unfortunately her sister is unable to attend today due to what Rachel said about our Steve at Julie's christening."

That would be when my working class parents managed to buy their own home for £4,000, save for a two week holiday at the seaside every summer for the four of us & we all got free school milk & meals. Shitty days

I assign my students the Said-Lewis exchange in the NYRB. Mostly they leave feeling disappointed in both of them for name-calling.

And it’s partly for this reason that the ripples of his fallout with the field Middle East Studies are still manifested today: what he meant and still means for people who study Turkey feels like a completely different thing to what he means to Arab studies. That’s a shame.

It is easy to read The Roots of Muslim Rage or What Went Wrong? and come to the conclusion that he was an archetypal orientalist driven by purely neoimperialist motivations. It’s harder to look back to the Emergence of Modern Turkey or earlier work & reach the same conclusion.

A very generous obit for Bernard Lewis, which incidentally mischaracterises Edward Said

Here is the link to the new travel reimbursement form. You need to sign it. We can't do electronic signature, so print it, sign it, scan it. and resubmit it so my assistant can print it, let me sign it, rescan it, and send it to the bursar.
