Great news - the beautiful & unusual lichen Multiclavula corynoides has been discovered for the 1st time in Britain! Sometimes known as Club-wielding Crust Lichen, it was found by our lichen expert @davidgenney when mountain biking around Ben Wyvis. bit.ly/2EVskhO pic.twitter.com/4I7XEl1Mwp

Good work @davidgenney You must have been going really slow on your bike to spot that one. 😉Another of our amazing NNRs throwing up a national treasure.

I wondered if he might have been fixing a puncture at the time!

Excellent! What makes it a lichen, rather than a fungi, in this case? At the moment it’s grouped in the fungi family Clavulinaceae, no?

A lichen because it gets its sugars through a symbiotic relationship with an algal partner. Lichenised fungi come from a range of fungal families but not so often from one that forms clubs like this. It was an exciting find 😀

It was a long hill and I was definitely going slowly 😁 I recommend the ride which gives stunning views of the NNR from every direction.

Well done @davidgenney. I’m too busy puffing up hills to spot anything unusual!
