For what it’s worth, I’m *super* happy to rename the default branch structure of “master” to “main” and I hope we can all do this together as a community with leading the charge by implementing in their product moving forward 🙂

It's a great idea and we are already working on this! cc

We're working to align across the community and with our friends who also have a significant stake in Git, but it seems like a good choice from our research and reasoning through it, and seems to be the choice most folks are going with that I've seen.

In databases, it is used alongside slave. That, I get. But isn’t the meaning “an original recording, film or document from which copies can be made” the source of its use in git? The music industry won’t volunteer to delete this useful word from its lecicon. Why should we?

If you’re going to change it and have everybody jump through hoops, I’d like to see a thorough etymology showing why. Including the origin of the term mastering in music, which would be very interesting, given the history of (esp black) artists not owning their masters.

I hope you guys make it a personal opt in preference instead of the new default, please don't make me update my workflow because of pointless (to me) politically correctness

Why will you have to update your workflow because of the new default setting for the base branch? Base branch is already configurable on Github, you can set it back to master if it's truly that important to you to signal to people that you don't care about their feelings.

This is one of the saddest and stupidest things I have ever seen, imagine renaming something that has absolutely no relevance because a bunch of soy entitled developers have nothing in life to worry about other than crying about pointless shit on social media.

The saddest part is, you're replying to the CEO of GitHub. They think it's a good idea.
