No, it's an artist's illustration. It shows a white dwarf star is pulling material off a brown dwarf companion. The material collects into an accretion disk until reaching a tipping point, causing it to suddenly increase in brightness. Credits: NASA and L. Hustak (STScI)

Researchers made a rare find in data from our retired Kepler spacecraft: a super-outburst🌟 from a previously unknown dwarf nova. The star system consists of a white dwarf that's stripping material from a much smaller brown dwarf, like a stellar vampire🧛🏽‍♀️

Planets beyond our solar system come in many shapes and sizes. Some orbit a host star in the habitable zone, but some are in the red zone — like this "hot Jupiter" found last year by . How gravitational forces made a football-shaped planet 🏈 :

Our Spitzer Space Telescope just ended a successful 16+ year mission. It was one of 's Great Observatories along with , & Compton. You could even call them ... super😉 See how they changed our view of the cosmos⬇️

Many of Spitzer's breakthroughs will be further studied by . Webb is also specialized for infrared, but is about 1,000 times more powerful. The telescope will be able to push Spitzer's science findings to new frontiers.

. was one of NASA's Great Observatories – with , & Compton – designed to observe the cosmos in different wavelengths. Spitzer specialized in infrared, peering beyond visible light. Think of them as our space telescope superteam.

Engineers confirm 's mission ended today. The spacecraft is in safe mode, as planned. In 16+ years in space, Spitzer changed our understanding of the universe & was a pathfinder for space telescopes to come. It was a very good spacecraft🖤

Spitzer is well past its original 2.5 year prime mission. In 2016, NASA made a decision to close out the Spitzer mission in 2018. When Webb's launch was postponed, Spitzer was granted an extension to continue operations until this year.
