I deem this genre of outrage “decorum inversion.” The President of the United States acts like a psycho constantly, nuking any expectation of normalcy. But the second someone else does something off color, especially as it relates to him, we must clutch our pearls in horror! 🙄

Jared Kushner does not see the brutal occupation I helped carry out. As a former soldier, I enforced two separate legal systems for Israelis and Palestinians. The Trump plan wants to make this reality permanent.

I wish her well too. In , I tell the story of a teenage girl whose list was: “Kiss in the rain. Go to Spain. Save a life.” She died doing the last item on her list.

Yes, in some sense. The utter imperviousness to facts and reason. The very extreme ideology and tribalism. I know this is very human. But it's still amazing to see it.

"Many emails contained a disturbing theme, typified by this line from one of them: 'Some day I, too, hope to speak out on this issue, but it is simply too dangerous at present.' This is a frightening sentiment to hear in academia." via

Fair enough. But this is a topic that you brought up. I think you were trying to illustrate the claim that there are different internal cognitive states — whether due to genetics or environmental exposures. The example of homosexuality which you raised didn’t seem ideal to me.

Which products are purchased together can reveal a lot about their relationship. But so can which products are viewed together, but not co-purchased. Our ( & ) new working paper leverages both types of baskets...

Thanks for the clarifications. Science paper identified SNPs & didn’t involve polygenic risk scores. So I’m not sure the link makes sense here (I much admire paige’s work of course!). On GxE more generally, where E plays role in expression of G see:

Perhaps you are right, but then isn’t that akin to old “race science” that we’ve roundly rejected? How do we square those claims with non-discriminatory policies? And regarding homosexuality in humans see

Are you making the argument that people’s ethnoracial or SES background is associated w their “cognition”? What specifically do you mean by “cognitive diversity”? If it’s that people’s backgrounds affect the topics that they are interested in, I would surely agree with that.

Well, in the other part of this branching thread, we discussed some of the work and social psychology on how raising salience can enhance prejudice (eg Dobbin).

No. On that topic, what I was asking was why we include an essay about diversity and not, say, an essay about the candidates commitment to multidisciplinary, leadership, or open expression, or anything else. Why is this topic included and no others?

I quite realize what Dobbin study did. There is a large body of work in social psychology supporting the statement above. In my view, we should focus on making sure there is no unfairness in our processes. And you still haven’t offered any thoughts on the demarcation problem?
