Thread: There’s a case to be made that great cities are defined by their arts. Those arts are only sustainable by them being viable economically (film-la, theatre-ny). It’s possible the best case for SF as global city with deep artistic culture is in immersive & interactive art.

Excellent point. My goal was really to help illuminate the problems/bottlenecks, since it’s hard to properly design solutions without some knowledge of the core issues. May not have come off that way though.

If this is the diagnosis, ways to address them? How do you make folks feel “at home” - I’m going to live in SF area for the rest of my life, drives different thinking for sure.

Is this really any different than the transient-ness of NY (finance, media) or DC (govt)? I haven’t seen any numbers. But feels like all three have a huge influx of folks there for professional reasons, but also a base of people who stay.

This resonates. What system would you design then? Should the language be bold plans that you can “get in to” by contributing? Pre-seed style?

What’s a system or structure that would encourage new money, and anti-establishment money, to be involved?

I think Nabeel's (2) has more depth to it. Old money (inherited) tends to assert social status through sponsorship of the arts, non-profit events, etc. New money does this largely to get accepted by old money. SV swamped by new money, doesn't have the same social structure.

It is. And that’s awesome to hear. Part of the issue is we really DON’T as a culture talk about it here, so this was a bit of an attempt to crack that door for me. Your work locally (and loudly on Twitter) is actually so anomalous and should be an inspiration to others.

Is it though? Is SF more transitory than New York (do a few years in finance) or DC? (do a tour in government)

Think I’m going to try writing one thing each weekday morning, post one photo each evening, skip social in between.

But civic projects here generally still crib the language and approaches of other cities. I’ve got brochures from DC and SF non profits with virtually the same language. Perhaps the approach just needs to be different.

SF culture is not one of incremental status upgrades like NY. It is driven off big plans, the raw power to try and change the status quo even if chances are slim. It’s one of the reasons I think SB50 has gotten so much conversation.

But maybe there is a key there. New York uses status as a driver for giving (gala parties, names on plaques). But as says, different cities send different messages on how to be successful there. ()

His point is that this thinking works well for startups maybe not so well for rebuilding/strengthening a society. It’s similar to this point by Sarah & Phil:

. has an insight related to SF that sticks out w/ me reading the replies. He says the intellectual culture here is unlike other places, it’s venture-like in problem solving — “here are 20 ideas, 19 are quite wrong, not even a little wrong, 1 could change everything.”
