Reading Weber on the scholar's work 100 years later: "Who but a blessed, tenured few could continue to believe that scholarship is a vocation?" My new essay (w/ P. Reitter & 's great edits): Is an intellectual vocation still possible today?

Today’s Q&A is relevant to all of us who are no longer employed in academia (or not sure whether we will be in the future) but still want to write a scholarly book. Will university press editors still want a book if its author isn’t employed as a professor?

This spring semester at is going to be a great one: two seminars, one on health activism and the other on disability+technology, plus an independent grad study on methods in medical history! Will post the syllabi on my faculty web page soon!

Oh, that's probably the one I saw referred to, though it's much worse than I thought.

Romney did the right thing, but the reason to find Trump guilty is that he did it, not bc of what god or your grandkids or history will think if you don’t find him guilty. The badness of bad behavior justifies its censure.

Just bc someone/thing “can’t help” doing something annoying doesn’t mean it isn’t annoying. They might not be responsible or blameworthy, but they’re still annoying.

Yesterday, students in our “HyperHistory” course - about history with non-textual sources - cored trees on campus with dendrochronologists and . As one student put it: “this is not like a usual history class... in the best possible way!”
