Only problem I see if if the proposal would be impossible to complete in another person's lab. GRFP will judge feasibility (loosely), even while acknowledging that students are not expected to pursue projects if funded.

We also do exercises I've developed which build skills in fun ways, happy to chat more about those. Feel free to contact me for details.

Yes, we do! We collect our own data, which gets students engaged enough to use R to discover results. Focus on graphing first (data viz is more compelling than stats), then add to it. We even do GIS in R, etc. I give fully-fleshed skeleton scripts to start, then take away support

I see a lot of people with Twitter climate Ph.D.’s saying that “there’s no evidence that extreme weather is getting more severe.” This is wrong. THREAD. 1/

Same same. Although, I did have to pause and think. I think I learned this term from my students like a year ago.

Open data is great, but if you don't pay attention to the details of how it was collected you can screw it up. Usually a good idea to invite the original data collectors as coauthors if possible.

Yesterday in class I said that emerald ash borer is hurtful to ash trees... so it's a pain in the ash. Later I pointed out a woodpecker nesting cavity in a dead ash... and decided not to make a joke about it being a real ash hole. And now I think I kind of let everyone down.

If $1 billion Euros can be raised in days for a cathedral (& I’m not saying that isn’t important), surely we can see more action, media & outcry for the ? * Half the planets rainforest * 10% of the carbon in ecosystems * Home to millions of Indigenous people
