I remember hearing a story about the one COBOL guy who consulted at a bank: all the other programmers had to wear suits, while he was in jeans + T-shirt and had a clause in his contract that let him bring his parrot to work

My dad was one of about a dozen COBOL jockey at a very (very) large bank in the 90’s, and he talked about a guy in the office who had basically the same arrangement, because he was the only assembly programmer who understood the payroll system.

The college I went to still teaches COBOL ...they also still use a textbook that has a section on "preparing for the new millennium".
