Here is a much, much, *much* better list of books that could have been promoted this month (and every month!)

What's not mentioned in here, though highlighted in the press release I received, is how they picked these titles: they used ~AI~ to scour a corpus of 100+ books to determine whether or not the protagonist was explicitly described as white, and if they weren't, they went to town!

Day 5 of this reading list honors poet Erica Dawson . I love her brilliant use of formal elements like repetition, rhyme, and meter. Her latest book is When Rap Spoke Straight to God. Here’s a poem from that collection:

The problem IS NOT CELL PHONES....this is NOT a solution "State Rep. Donnie Bell has authored a bill that would command sentences of three to 15 years for any prisoner or DOC employee caught with a cell phone"

🇺🇲 , you have less than two weeks to make sure your voter registration is up to date so that you can vote in the primary. Get it done! 🇺🇲

Love this book the most of all of Winterson’s work. As an adoptee, she’s got the outsider perspective that’s so necessary (IMHO) to great literature.

Yep, Branwell, during his chronic, self-induced comas. The patriarchy was strong in that one.

Day 4 of my literature list is about Michael Twitty and his genre-bending book The Cooking Gene. I have learned so much about the connections between food, ancestry, and identity from his work.

Not convinced we have a human rights crisis happening in our prisons and jails nationwide? Look at my timeline...

Think about this: — Iowa is 90.7% white — Iowa is now the only state with a lifetime voting ban for people with a felony conviction — Black people make up 4% of Iowa's population but 26% of its prison population How is this representative of our electorate?

This was from a journal kept by Butler. Can’t remember where I got it from, but her papers are archived at the Huntington museum:

Yesterday I sang the praises of the poet Ai; today I’m remembering novelist Octavia Butler and how her Patternist series saved my sanity in the late 1970’s and early 1980’s. She worked hard at writing and had a vision for her success.

He was in fact the first African American to earn a PhD in *any* subject from an American university, one of the first ten people of any race to earn a PhD in physics from an American university, and one of the first Americans to earn a PhD in any subject in the US.

Written on the Body by Jeanette Winterson avoids naming by use of second person. I think she did that to avoid gendering.
