What if we are dealing with an international, xenophobic, right-wing movement that we ignore because we believe that AI-controlled social bots that brainwash people are more plausible?

I know people who are convinced that only Trump/Brexit/AfD can save their country. They become active in every major election or public debate.
These people are no bots, no trolls, no russian sock puppets, but people who seem to base their worldview on Fox News/Bild/tabloids/…

Once the scientists detected these bots, they could retrieve all their tweets, analyze very deeply how they manipulate people and assess the actual impact.
Problem solved.
But nobody actually did this … except for counting the hashtags.
I wonder why. 🤨

This does not change the fact that research groups are unable to find them down and instead mistakenly classify people as bots.
But ... can I talk to your source?

I only used data from the official Twitter API. What do you mean by „demographics“?

Of course.
Especially during the US elections and the UK referendum there were a lot of highly active people fighting on all platforms. They fought for/against Trump or for/against Brexit. That was highly emotional. Of course they reached over 50 Tweets/day.

I tried to reproduce the results and couldn’t find these thousands of Bots.
I can only reach their numbers if I count every tweet. That’s suspicious.

Okay, I think I'm gonna have to disagree with you. In particular, social problems are projected onto social media. I have a lot of arguments on this.
Maybe we can settle this over a coffee/beer sometime?

Then please refute this with evidence, not with unproven claims.

But these were not social bots or Russian sock puppets.
They were right-wing people who are convinced of a media conspiracy and they distort many public discussions.
Why the hell are we still talking about social bots?

Could you be so kind and rank the following possible factors based on their actual influence on the election results?
- Trolls on Twitter
- Clinton was a bad candidate
- 2016 DNC e-mail leak
- Gerrymandering
- Racism and Islamophobia as mass phenomenon in the US
- Fox News

True, but have trolls on Twitter influenced the election results?

Theoretically, yes. Probably with minimal effect.
But almost every scientific study on social bots did not examine fake followers, likes and retweets, but rather accounts that can automagically generate texts of their own to change political views.
