The great John McPhee, when asked about his experience as an environmental writer.
(I find this passage extremely striking, & reread it at least once or twice every year. It's from a much longer interview: theparisreview.org/interviews/599… ) pic.twitter.com/ktFLDJyFvD

So great. 'don't hold me to this forever'
it really resonates, just wanting to be some thing in a moment and not having it inscribed on your tombstone.

Yes! The first two sentences of that paragraph are what really make the passage for me. Just beautiful.

My one email response from @paulg was about his favorite books. He said they were books written by McPhee.

Very good choices. If you want just a taste, try "The John McPhee reader", which is a sample of some shorter essays. They ranged from extremely good to extraordinary, IMO.

I seem to keep liking it each year you tweet it.

That's delightful 😀
I suspect I read it about 3x as often as I tweet it.
More nerd sniping: I cannot read a snippet from the Susan Sontag interview in PR without reading the entire thing. I _must not_ link to it now, or I'll just have to reread it again...

It’s a little like what I found fascinating about that Errol Morris doc, The Fog of War: I know people who skew this way or that on McNamara and what he was a part of, and yet somehow when they watch it they all feel like it speaks their truth

Every interview I've read from him is very worthwhile, this one being my favorite: jstor.org/stable/4315694…
