Again I have a different view on the "actuality" of any supposed singular utility, because of the extreme multitude of possible life paths and the dynamic, fluctuating, chaotic, probabilistic quality of personal assessments of value and ability people have to adapt and reframe

If the scale is 0 to n, in the limit as n -> infinity, you're literally allowing multiple scores to converge to the same value

Like basically if someone earnestly wants to express that two choices are incomparable, why should we destroy that information? It's useful information for making a good voting system!

This is one of those places where you and I probably differ in terms of our philosophical framing of life and stuff. (You have "utilitarian" as the first word of your bio!) But I don't think it ought to detract from my point about information.

In partially ordered set theory, elements in a poset that "tie" are called "incomparable". I like this language. For me it captures the essence of "an actual tie". I don't think people even have stable, one dimensional number line with precise utility values for every choice.

I guess I'm thinking of it from an information perspective. Restricting ties destroys information about voter preferences. A tie in someones preference is an important piece of information that ordinal voting systems destroy.

are you talking about ranked systems that allow partial orders?

I was shooting for an argument that a 6 year old would understand. Imagine a talent show that doesn't allow ties even if the audience begs for one. What kind of sadistic talent show is that? I feel that the "tie" language is nice because people are deeply familiar with ties.

in explaining the big picture impacts of voting systems, I agree that this is a pretty succinct explanation. I think the struggle for a lot of people is just understanding the difference between i.e. STAR and RCV on a completely basic level.

it really bumps i hope the kids will understand that at the end of the day

ooh, I just though of an even simpler explanation: cardinal voting systems let you have ties in your personal preference, ordinal systems force you to break all your personal ties, thereby pitting all of your choices against each other and driving you into restlessness and doubt

suddenly one of the other kids, a popular kid, has started to pit 21 savage lovers against ariana grande fans by spreading mean memes on snapchat and tiktok. people are freaking out. wtf is going on.

suddenly our young person friend is stressing really hard because he's worried that if he casts his vote wrong, justin will come to the high school. he begins to strategize.

okay here's a better one: imagine a young person who absolutely adores 21 savage AND ariana grande (but they can't stand justin bieber, sorry jusin bieber). one of the artists will come perform at school, why shouldn't our friend be allowed to say "I love them both!"

maybe not the teens, but I would lol. I mean you get the idea though right? maybe for teenagers you'd have to switch the choices to make it more relevant.
