The final day I came down from the pass between two massive glaciers- the location of Eyjafjallajökull, the volcanic eruption that caused the 2010 flight disruptions. I had perfect weather and eventually reached the end: Skógafoss..! :)

Some images to show the variation in terrain and weather. Barren ash plains, snow fields, volcanic craters, sulphurous mud flats, mossy expanses and huge exposed rocky ridges. I woke up on the 3rd day to an amazing dust storm that also kicked up massive amounts of ash.

The “stand alone” mountains really got me- the black twisted forms with the bright green moss cascading down in huge swathes and gradients. I couldn’t help but stop and stare as I passed each one.

There’s generally a two month “safe” window to trek in Iceland. I got lucky and experienced pretty much the whole range of weather conditions. I walked past a few memorials that marked the spots where trekkers had been killed by exposure- in one case only half a k from safety...

6 days trekking in Iceland. By FAR the most visually stunning and impressive landscapes I’ve ever seen. The scale of some of the rips, tears and folds of volcanic activity and erosion is off the charts.

Just back from a fantastic 6 day trek in Iceland. Truly epic scale and unbelievably stunning scenery. Skógafoss waterfall marked the end of the trek- I ran straight into it after dropping the rucksack for the best shower ever. :)

Couldn't speak over the blade as tiny drops of spit might land on it, causing rust spots- and then polishing takes off minuscule layers too

Then raise it straight up to see the curve and catch the light and reflections in the polish... At times it looked jet black, then white

You then roll it side to side along its back edge (front was razor sharp) to view it and see the crystals and patterning- it felt amazing
