I took a phone call today to be a reference for a former coworker. I was 100% prepared for their rote questions and then her new manager completely blindsided me. “What feedback could you give me to be the best manager for her I could be?”

I love being a reference for others but find that people doing reference checks ask uninspired questions. I learned so much from my call today and will def incorporate the questions I was asked into future reference checks I have to do.

In addition to the above question, the new manager shared with me the strengths she had identified in my former coworker during the interview process, 2 possible career paths for her, and asked how best to encourage and challenge her to try both before deciding which was best.

We had a great talk about imposter syndrome and where the previous organization failed to support so that the new manager could be more successful. As someone who values support and growth, I’ve never been happier during a reference check.

There were no gotchas or fact-finding for weakness. Other managers, take note! This is how you learn about potential future team members and set everyone up for success.

Wow, this took off! I’m happy to report that yes, my former coworker got the job and I let her know that she’s joining a team with a wonderful and supportive manager. I couldn’t be happier for her 🤗

What I hear in that question is an attempt to find a reason not to hire them. They're looking for some surprise thing because they feel the candidate tricked them. After hire would be different, but I would be very suspicious during a reference check.

I don't know if we're particularly cynical because it was my first thought as well but everyone else through either likes and replies is apparently just gushing at how great a question it was
