The social impact board the board has exactly zero enumerated powers within Libra’s actual governance structure.... Nonprofits can never add up to more than a third of the voting shares.

FB seems to think unbanked face a systems challenge, to be fixed w private investment & remote engineers. Ppl who actually study prob of unbanked & actually do something about it, treat it as a sociological challenge to address w educ & local institutions.

Spoiler alert: it's a glorified exchange traded fund using blockchain buzzwords to neutralise regulatory impact of coming to mkt w/o a licence & to veil disproportionate influence of FB in what it hopes will eventually become a global digital reserve systm

The excellent ⁦⁩ does it again, fairly and surgically laying out the ugly personal cost of the social network’s platform. Think we are too hard on FB? Think again: Facebook moderators break NDAs to expose desperate working conditions

1. Gdpr-esque laws are passing in many countries (see Uganda's recent data protection laws). 2. Sensitive data is beyond personal data (including community data, proprietary data), but we don't have a way to assess it well. 3. We need to talk about Gov'ts legal misuse of data.

We need GDPR plus for everyone. GDPR is no silver bullet solution for the data governance challenges we all face, particularly as it relates to the unregulated question of groups data. Personally Identifiable Information, or PII, protections from GDPR alone are not enough anymore

When companies frame their work as purely positive and show zero willingness to engage in the hard political questions their ‘innovations’ raise, we shouldn’t trust them. With that frame, I can’t think of a technology company we should trust.

Agreed! And the whole "see how women and former slaves will become evil and kill everyone if they get power" narrative was super annoying. And that last bit about "hey, let's let the people elect their leaders!" It was like a parody of itself. Ugh.

Finally caught up on Season 8 of GoT. I was definitely warned, but I'm sad I can't unwatch the finale. The level of the dialog was maybe 2 years higher than that of our current president.

I have such high hopes for El Salvador's new president. "No more corruption. No more elected officials not doing their jobs. If you want to be a millionaire, then go work in the private sector. [In government] we are here to serve, 24/7."
