On this day in 1542, Catherine Howard, Henry VIII’s fifth wife, was executed at the Tower of London. She was buried in the Chapel Royal of St Peter ad Vincula, where her cousin Queen Anne Boleyn had been unceremoniously buried six years earlier.

On this day in 1587, Mary Queen of Scots was executed in the great hall at Fotheringhay Castle. She was 44 years old and had spent the last 19 years of her life incarcerated in various castles and houses around England, including Bolton Castle, Tutbury Castle & Sheffield Castle.

If Buddy Holly were alive today, he'd be 82. Instead he died in 1959 — sixty years ago today — "the day the music died." The Big Bopper, Ritchie Valens and the pilot also died. They were heading for Fargo. Holly hired the plane after heating problems developed on his tour bus.
