These words dominate even at Paul Ries & Lijochu, the importers of cars in like Peugeot and Citroen. Even in Moenko, importers of everything Japanese, you order Kandela if you want spark plugs.

Few neighborhoods remain like the one we show here which has to remain anonymous. Fiercely guarded by its residents who live in ancestral homes from Menelik era, it faces threat from greedy developers. Cleanest air in Addis, possible encounters with hyenas in daytime!

Yoseph Abate, an up and coming artist captures the face of Piazza near Omar Khyyam Restaurant (best Middle East food in Addis) on the way to Serategna Sefer. Beautiful Addis. .

Piazza needs an anchor businesses to bring back its old glory now taken by pretender & usurper neighborhoods like Bole. Castelli is too low-profile. Burning of Taytu Hotel top floor took away JazzAmba. Fendika should move to Piazza! Mammo Kacha & ?! .

Addis won’t be a complete city until Piazza, it’s old town, is revived and revitalized. It will be fitting to Piazza’s reputation, if its revival is led by our writers and artists. Imagine , , & built 1-2 story buildings get colorful restoration.

No neighborhood captures essence, heart, & soul of Addis like Piazza. This is where the old & beautiful Addis exists - where Adisabans & characters from novels of Bealu Girma, Birhanu Zerihun, Sebhat G/Egziabher, & Tadesse Liben lived, loved, sinned, & found hope. .

3000 Birr ($100) in could get you these many books, some of them very classic. Someone asked why buy Kesate Berhan Amharic Dictionary (weighs 2.5 kilos!)? Curiosity: the writer tells his readers in intro that he was personally instructed by God himself to write this!?

Reading autobiography by Professor Shibiru Tedla “Ke-Gurezam Maryam Iske Addis Ababa”. Former professor at AAU, he has first-hand stories about personalities and events from 50s-early 2000s. Love the stories. But like his generation, no critical examination of student movement.

One of Addis Ababa’s well-kept secrets are its old fashioned book stores. This gem of a book store near 4 Kilo Campus of AAU had been visited by restless students leaders of the 60s and 70s like Haile Fida, Debteraw, etc. Dropped more than 3000 birr in one visit here.

Very fair and well-informed assessment. “ethnic federalism was “a very useful tool for the TPLF,“They as 6% of the population couldn’t dominate efficiently through a unitary system.” Federalism allowed the TPLF to pit ethnic groups against one another...”
