yeah. i'm comparing to a more Traditional Platform Game situation where you'd have to start the whole level over again on every death, or maybe have a couple checkpoints per level. that's fun for some people (it's basically what speedrunning is!) but has less general appeal

That said, a thing that I like about this book is that there are parts that I can disagree with, or find specific counterexamples to, and that's fine. The parts that are insightful are still insightful; and a heuristic that's true 90% of the time is still useful.

Yeah, the obvious counterexample to me here is Eve Online, in which people form extremely elaborate organizational structures to order to protect and attack intangible objects. Part of the thrill of the game is that losing a ship is real, even though the ships aren't *real*.

Fun (?) homework for Googlers: look up through your org chart & figure out who in your management chain is giving significant amounts to NetPAC. Consider providing formal or informal feedback on how their contributions make you feel.

ABSTRACT: in this phd thesis, we represent meme instances as sparse vectors of image features and their accompanying text mapped into a high-dimensional eigenmeme space. we utilize an unsupervised machine learning algorithm to find equivalence classes of memes which cluster ab 1/

i love Galaxy Brain memes that could also (with minor tweaking) be American Choppers memes

an amusingly jarring change in going from Google to indie gamedev: -> read or create my own docs -> read official Microsoft API docs *every time* i'm like "nope, not looking for MS-Word-in-the-Cloud, better skip that result"

I mean, it mutes the *quoted* part of the tweet, but I still see the reaction of the person QTing, which I'd rather not. (And like, I definitely don't want to mute the people who are QTing, because I'm usually fine with their other content)

yeah. but i regularly see CEOs using this as excuse to (say) engaged in complicated international tax-avoidance schemes (like Eric Schmidt, former Google CEO). and this is just: completely made up. Google could just decide to pay their fair share of US taxes. but they won't.

have you tried MonoGame? i settled on that as the best tradeoff for "keeps me from needing to write low-level display/input code, but lets me Just Write Code to update & draw the world"
