In all the screaming about tariffs, very few people are willing to point the finger at the real problem here, which is a very scary and increasingly dictatorial China.

Chinese military aggression, theft of technology, and assertive censorship all over the world is an emergency.
The U.S. and China seem to be headed for a more confrontational relationship in Southeast Asia as Washington warns of a more aggressive response to the militarization of islands in the South China...

Many of the tariffs, like those targeted at the Europeans, are actually oriented around stopping the EU's coddling of Chinese steel and aluminum subsidization. China is trying to monopolize the production of basic commodities. This is dangerous stuff.

Trump's re-imposition of tariffs on Chinese technology goods is necessary, the way he's doing it is embarrassing. But the $500M Chinese financing of a Trump project in Malaysia what what seems to be allowing ZTE to break the law looks like like a crime.

The genuine America chauvinists are people who refuse to see in Chinese aggression a actual threat to displace the West and turn us into an agricultural colony. It's beyond their imagination because they don't respect China as a powerful assertive country with real agency.

The Europeans and the Canadians know this, but they are too stupid, cowardly, and invested in China to work with us on the problem. Same with Wall Street, which is selling us out to China. Trump gives all these people a self-righteous excuse.

Why is the West different from China? Rule of law. The complaints against Chinese dumping are sourced and clear, and there's due process. The Chinese Communists simply do whatever they want to respond. These are not compatible systems.

What exactly is "theft of technology"? If it's a patent, how to practice the technology is available through the patent office, and if inot, why should the government spend any effort to protect something when the inventor didn't enter the patent bargain?

I *really* don’t think you understand China at all. This is the American disease. You’re so blind to other cultures you imagine them all as being as xenophobic and outwardly aggressive as yourselves. It’s narcissistic projection.
