I was at this event and it was scary how much false information speakers like were passing on to their audiences regarding tech and science. For example, she told audience that she met a man who used CRISPR to edit his 1-year-old’s eye color and height.

To be clear: their are many ethical concerns surrounding much of the research around and and these are being actively debated, and it would have been great if could have given a platform to experts studying that instead of misinformation givers. (End)

I think part of the blame is the who often don’t operate in the public good sphere but rather at a sensational and bottom-line level. But part of the blame is us: we must educate the public on our research to relieve anxieties surrounding it.

This has made me realized that has a scientist we do a horrible job at PR around our research. The misinformation at didn’t stop there, they ventured into other topics such as . The public anxieties surround these topics were very real and very raw.

Their main message was along the lines of “science aims to get rid of imperfect, and humanity is imperfect, therefore science aims to get rid of humanity.” Giving such a person a public platform is dangerous and spreads public anxieties.

This person went on to claim that someone had developed an app where you could mix and match which DNA segments you wanted your baby to have and that did person had given birth to an “edited” baby in the US
