Fun fact, if you want to go from one side of Maui to the other you have to take this weird, 30-mile, up-and-back-down detour UNLESS you are Oprah Winfrey, who owns a private 4-mile road that she has paved and everything, connecting the narrowest part of the route.

Why on earth hasn't Hawaii made a public road to shorten that route?

if it’s a private road why does google maps have real-time traffic data for it?

That probably cost her $20M or so to pave

Yep. I live on Oahu but was just over to Mauai this past summer. This is a thing. It's the worst. If only Oprah would say "and YOU get a road" "and YOU get a shorter commute" "and YOU get back 45min of your life you waste sitting in your car for no reason"

Google doesn't care who is using their app, just so long as it's on your phone while you drive down your private road flipping off the peasants

On my private tours, I drive by there a lot. The top of the road is a public dead-end cul-de-sac. It ends in several gated driveways, Oprahs is only one of them. From that point on, it's her driveway. It would be nice if I could use it, but it is her private driveway.
