A question for : if you were going to include either Charlotte Temple or The Coquette on an Early American Lit survey syllabus, which would you choose, and why? I’ve taught both in the past, but I’m having a hard time remembering the specific strengths of each.

I desperately wish every league at every level of every sport would either adopt this approach or abolish replay altogether.

no subset of humanity is weirder or sadder than the one that has spent the past like 40 years refusing to believe Donald Trump is as simple and stupid as literally every bit of available evidence demonstrates he is

Thank you for going to my hometown, Waterloo, Iowa, and challenging they way we falsely racialize Midwestern voters and working-class, Rust Belt voters, always as white. Wonder if political reporters will ever get the message.

Here’s the effect of weak ass takes getting published in high-profile venues. Wallace got the description of a tennis point wrong in 2006, NYT published a correction almost immediately but suddenly it’s a story in 2019 & DFW is a fabulist.

All I want my fiction to do is seamlessly adapt a 5,000 page unfinished saga from another medium, to provide satisfying payoffs to all of the mythology therein, and to end with a bloodless transfer of power that is both suspenseful and matches all of my hopes for each character.

I'm so darn tired of this talk. We profoundly disagree on stuff. That's why we have political parties. In a democracy, you lay out your agenda to voters and let them decide if they want them. You don't obsessively focus on coddling the losing party.

Yep, I have the same concerns. I think pulling off a satisfying ending at this point would be an enormous feat and my expectations are fairly low.

I’ll argue that the treatment of Jon Snow was pretty bold. They took a guy in whom fans have invested all of their hopes and revealed that he was essentially worthless in the face of an immeasurable force. Same, to a lesser degree, with Tyrrian, Danerys, Jamie, Sansa, etc.
