I have an article about teaching DFW in comp classes coming out in the MLA Approaches to Teaching Wallace that mounts a pedagogical defense of this sort of thing. Hoping it comes out this year.

But to attract students to upper-level classes, it’s not enough just to make FYC really engaging. FYC faculty need the opportunity to teach upper-level courses. Students are much more likely to follow a favorite instructor than to take a class with someone they don’t know.

I understand the fear of turning FYC into a series of seminars on literary sub-genres. But that’s why we work so hard to write learning outcomes. If faculty can use an accessible novel to help students write about social problems (or whatever the LO is), why not allow it?

It’s incoherent because programs that ‘ban’ literature often adopt textbooks that feature plenty of literature. Unless your definition of literature excludes essays by Frederick Douglass, Virginia Woolf, James Baldwin, etc. In which case...

I have always found the idea of banning lit in comp classes totally incoherent and made sure to avoid that trap as a WPA. No one would ever suggest a ‘ban’ on texts that deal with history, psychology, or politics in comp, so why ban literary texts?

I am very impressed that a team won a game by scoring 12 points and then it took 18 MORE YEARS to get a shot clock introduced. As always, the NCAA is a bastion of forward thinking and experimentation.

MYR Hot Yacht: Jam of the Day is by the late, great, James Ingram with “Yah Mo Be There”. Along with Michael McDonald on this track we have the best dudet (dude duet), hands down. One of music’s smoothest voices. He will be missed.

I need journalists to stop calling racism "racially charged." There is no such thing as racially charged. That is a term you have invented because you think calling someone a racist is worse than someone actually being a racist.
