Just because cable news has air time to fill does not mean that our election system is in crisis or that we should have concerns about the system's integrity. We need to train anchors and headline writers about how to responsibly cover election night w/o damaging democracy 2/2

This is an interesting thread about why software works so badly in political campaigns. I'm retweeting the one in the middle because it was something that both was new to me and seems obvious in retrospect. Would like to see more essays on this topic. twitter.com/rabble/status/…

<Grunting> Vulnerability of fingerprint verification might yet again dawn on you if you accidentally touch a hot surface and disable the corresponding fingerprint for a few weeks ahead. (And the fingertip had just toughened a bit, not even got any actual burn). </Grunting>

Back in the day when "middle management" was a thing, the biggest part of the job was making sure the right people talked together.
I once told that to Dawn, a successful academic organizer-of-programs, and she said the polite equivalent of "Well, duh." twitter.com/__apf__/status…

Ever since someone pointed out to me that naïve is spelled like “Evian” in reverse I’ve only been able to type it in by tracing my finger across the letters e v i a n and then quickly going back in reverse.

Every newsroom that has been spreading the “undermining trust in elections” narrative has been through a product launch at least as bad as the Iowa app, or has had the luxury of postponing one that would’ve been worse. Why isn’t this reflected in more of their coverage?

That's basically what I did: a `MetaValue` struct with a value field and a metadata field.
Not that my spending the afternoon on a well-tested spike means that I'm going to take on the whole project, no sirree, no way.

One of Clojure's nice side-features is how you can hang arbitrary *run-time accessible* metadata onto nodes in data structures. It just occurred to me that a difficulty with a 3d party library could be readily solved given metadata, and that metadata can be faked in Elixir. Hmm.

Story points worked in one situation, and have moved from there to many places. They were perhaps the best idea we had then, but they are a pretty weak idea anywhere else.
I was there when they were invented and I don't recommend them now.

The most recent version of Android is aping the iPhone by removing a constantly-visible button that you can click to see what it does. Now you get to randomly gesture to see what kind of swipe resurrects that behavior.

One thing that's important to stress about Iowa is that everybody at the caucus events learns the outcome. The statewide result could be reconstructed even if there weren't a paper trail, but there is also a very thorough paper trail. The integrity of the election is not in doubt
