Day four of protesting the Doug Snelgrove mistrial outside Supreme Court. Supporters are here so the complainant knows she’s not alone. More trauma training for lawyers and judges wouldn’t hurt either, they say

The jury acquitted Snelgrove in 2017, but appeals court noted the judge failed to instruct the jury to consider Snelgrove’s position of authority as an on-duty cop. The judge included abuse of authority in his instructions this time around

Crown reminds jury they don’t have to accept Snelgrove’s account of that night. Says complainant describes sitting down, then a blank, then coming to when Snelgrove spoke during intercourse. If the jury believes she passed out during that time, then law says she did not consent

Prosecutor Lloyd Strickland giving his closing argument next. If time permits the judge will then instruct the jury and they’ll be sequestered to decide the verdict

We’re hearing arguments for the sex assault trial of RNC officer Doug Snelgrove. Because the complainant can’t remember giving consent, the jury only has Snelgrove’s evidence to go by - and he says she looked sober and willing, defence counsel says

Snelgrove and one other witness, who testified to drinking 8 beers that night, have said the woman did not appear intoxicated. Multiple other witnesses said she was noticeably drunk, tripping and slurring her words. Woman says she was drunk to point of blacking out

Says there was no indication she was intoxicated except for the “faint smell of alcohol” on her breath. Snelgrove’s voice shakes. He tells the jury he was upset as he left her house, and upset now as he recalls that night. “I think about my wife and what I’ve done,” he says

Snelgrove testifies the complainant approached him, asked for a ride home, and invited him into her apartment. Says she started kissing him, helped remove his pants, willingly performed oral sex and nodded her head in consent to intercourse
