I reviewed Upstairs Inferno for a couple years back. Great, tragic snapshot of LGBT history. This moving article below gives a sense of some of the heavy themes it works with. Burned and ignored... so awful. But surfacing in memory now. ()

There's a case against Pelosi for Speaker, and a case for her. But there's no case for Schumer. It's a real testament to how weak Senate liberals are that they refused to challenge him.

I've been reading Emmanuel Carrere's THE KINGDOM, and it's just phenomenal. A learned, chatty, funny guide to the first century AD, a time period crucial to our own. Also a warm exploration of how and why people believe the preposterous -- even today.

Would be pretty cool if Beto launched his presidential run by doing a road trip with Cory Gardner and Susan Collins, then ended up losing to Trump by 2.5 EVs while Gardner and Collins both won.

"If he invited me to a public hanging, I'd be on the front row"- Sen. Cindy Hyde-Smith says in Tupelo, MS after Colin Hutchinson, cattle rancher, praises her. Hyde-Smith is in a runoff on Nov 27th against Mike Espy.

I understand the usage but think it's a dumb category. Many of us from other parts of the country grew up with a gulf between WASPs and "ethnic" whites. I'm not super sensitive about it but don't like saying/writing it either, especially for Jews, Catholics, E Orthodox.

Urban precincts are larger and much more Democratic, and larger precincts favor Republicans by creating larger "voter inconvenience." (This is often by design in Republican-run states, such as Florida and Georgia.)

election narrative in one sentence: "Dems are forced to abandon Southern and impeachment strategies and turn all energies to beating Trump in 2020 in the Rust Belt, which is swinging back their way."

So, lots of investigations and new R judges, but no impeachment, and lots of fake "deals" that are kabuki theatre aimed at voters in WI, MI, PA. Dems have House and key gov'ships, which gives them a reasonably strong hand, but it'll be a battle to the end, barring pee tape. (2/2)

I do see a clear narrative from last night. Everything in politics the next two years will be about the Rust Belt states. Future of the Dem party is building multiracial democracy in southern tier states (AZ, TX, GA, FL), but they need more than two years for that. (1/2)

They've been getting there for a while, but last night Houston and Dallas came into their own as big blue cosmopolitan cities. If you look at the trajectory of cities that have been that way for longer, the culture just incubates and can transform hinterlands, too.

Lots of talk on here about if Pelosi deserves her gavel, but it's most clear to me that Schumer flunked his first 2 years. What a disaster in the Senate. New leadership, please.
