Disagree. Honking in Mumbai & India is not used primarily to indicate anger but to signal. Hence truck signs, “Horn Please.” The cause is lack of lane control—4 cars, 2 tuk-tuks, and a motorcycle can occupy two lanes, three if you count one lane going in the other direction.

Lest you think this sounds too incredible to be true, this is NOT the first or only study connecting increases in both interpersonal as well as societal violence to higher temperatures. For example:

This mechanism explains perfectly why policy and politics seem to have decoupled so neatly: when problems are solved, people are more likely to see more of them. One of the most insightful things I've read in a long time, even on a night like this.

Remember this the next time you hear somebody assert that is always a slow, protracted affair, requiring many decades. This one is happening at lightning speed.

At their peak in 1980 illegal drugs accounted for 5 % of total personal consumption expenditure in US. An astonishing figure corroborated by contemporary estimates that cocaine sales peaked at $35bn in 1980. Rachel Soloveichik

We're not going to limit temp to 1.5C. The weird social pressure to continue pretending we can, or might, is weird to me. The situation is tragic. The people & institutions responsible deserve all the anger in the world. But it is what it is.

A couple of months ago, when I asked Pinker in person why he continues to elevate the work of discredited bigots, offering, for example, that Harpending once said, "I’ve never seen anyone with a hobby in Africa" (from this article )...

Note that the work of white supremacist Henry Harpending, cited by that embarrassing Bret Stephens NYT column (now w/a bizarre, disingenuous editors note added) is a long-time favorite of Steven Pinker, who peddles discredited pseudoscience all the time.

1. I worked with Anna Zaitsev (Berkely postdoc) to study YouTube recommendation radicalization. We painstakingly collected and grouped channels (768) and recommendations (23M) and found that the algo has a deradicalizing influence. Pre-print: 🧵
