One of the greatest Go players of all time (arguably) decided to retire because of the existence of an AI that cannot be defeated. This actually kind of really breaks my heart a bit. Yay progress?

i don't understand. but the invention of cars have not demoralized the spirits of runners? why can't Go players hold humans-only competitions?

I believe they do hold human-only competitions, but apparently the existential dread of the existence of the AI was too much for this guy to handle. Maybe when you spend that much time believing you are THE best entity in existence at something, you can't let it go so easily?

I totally understand his reaction. It is so hard to achieve his level. And GO is pointless and futile. You can accept that if you feel like an intrepid explorer, but not as a rat in a maze that someone else has already solved.

Doesn't break my heart at all. Chess players have been mentally coping with unbeatable AIs for decades. How about this alternative, somewhat cruel, take: "Millenial discovers he's not the absolute best at something, quits immediately"

Wait. But isn’t it like saying I’m gonna stop doing math because a calculator exists?
