IMO there are real probs and made-up probs with academia. Pressures on young ppl and families are real. Complaints about grading+teaching among tenured ppl are not. Very grateful for the opportunities I have but know I have a easy time as tenured prof in a big welfare state (DK)

Seen a lot of posts lately about work/life balance + evils of academia. I’m not denying their existence for many (+ some disproportionately), but I also want prospective to know this: My work is to play w ideas + talk to smart people. That’s a great life!

Yes, totally agree that this doesn't mean that social media are not polarising. I very much think they are.

True. And these data also imply that echo-chambers are stronger offline than online, interestingly not because people talk more to out-groups online, but bc they talk to in-groups even less.

Alex, I believe we actually have that ourselves, right? In the surveys, we have Qs about whether you discuss politics with people who you agree/disagree with online and offline.

In 1927, Harold Laswell wrote an article with this gem: "The ever-present function of propaganda in modern life is in large measure attributable to the social disorganization which has been precipitated by the rapid advent of technological changes." Link:

In many ways, yes! We should just not expect it to be comfortable, depolarising or stabilizing. And, for it to work out, it requires a firm commitment to Enlightenment values. In essence, digital education should contain a crash course in deliberative democracy.

Your friends, family and co-workers are similar to you in terms of education, politics and personality. On social media you are way more likely to interact with different people. An example: The jokes you and your friends laugh about in the bar doesn't fare well on SoMe.

New evidence that social media do *not* create echo chambers. They break them. The article spins this as good news. But, in my opinion, this is exactly why social media can feel like such hostile places. They rip us out of our comfortable offline bubbles.

Also, coalitional psychology is not "ineradicable" but is rather designed for navigating a large number of trade-offs relating to when and how to signal support. I discuss some of these in the context of mass politics in this chapter:

This sounds like a group-selection argument, which pushes some of the adaptive complexities under the rug. I would start here:
