'Alexa, are you invading my privacy?' – the dark side of our voice assistants. I was trying to persuade my 11 year old to start reading 1984 yesterday. It will be such a different book to this generation than it was to ours, given where we are now.

Indeed. We will be v.much diminished, and irretrievably so, by the time most people realise it. The sense of invincibility/superiority that the Brit perspective on history instils is hugely problematic. Maybe we do need Brexit for people to see the light. Tragic...

I partially flip about 40% of my lectures by giving a 15 min video to watch before the face-to-face session. They have a handout to complete as they go along, keeping them engaged. I ask them to hold up completed handouts at the start of the session to see who has/hasn’t done it.

Ooh, that’s very cool - thanks for sharing this. Great to see skills portfolios in physics! Uni academics are normally judged on their number of citations, but it’s hard to measure this kind of impact as you don’t know who’s using stuff.

Haven’t planned everything yet. Flying into Seattle and coming back from San Francisco. Visits to Mount St Helens, Yosemite and anywhere involved in filming of the Goonies are essential!
