30 seconds after taking this meaningful photo of my first ice cream of spring, the entire head of this unicorn cornetto fell off and landed in front of the dog, who proceeded to eat it in the most undignified way, making a very big mess of the pavement - 2/10

The new stuff is cool but we’re definitely missing that seedy grime that made those venues so appealing & fun. In time we’ll get it back. But I guess I’m also grateful we can compartmentalise it to OUR YOUTH!

But then, as I write this, I am sitting in a new building two blocks up and I can’t for the life of me recall what used to be here pre 2011. It’s gone for today. Nothing.

Chch is such a unique bonkers place. To be relatively young but to be living in a ghost of a city that is also being reborn in many exciting ways. Most people have to live to 90 to get that.

Today I went into the discount store on Colombo St where mid city market used to be. And on the jumbled counter was all the illicit paraphernalia that was everywhere in mid-city in my teens. Suddenly I AM BACK THERE AS A TEENAGER! I can see & smell it all.

Some days I walk this city & I really have to wince & think hard to recall what buildings or shops stood on each corner. Then some days the ghosts & memories come so clear & fast it’s like 1999 all over again.
