''I have long believed that, even with all the subsequent advances of medicine, we are far more vulnerable to a similar pandemic than to, say, climate change.''
Certainly. In an epidemic, populations die exponentially faster than global warming.

"The way to look at paranoia is not per event, rather per payoff for the attitude over a seq at a specific scale. How did humanity survive? Can we survive w/o paranoia? The Q b/c really, r we paranoid enuf... the asymmetry is such tt a slight decrease in paranoia will blow us up"

"The real problem of humanity is the following: we have paleolithic emotions; medieval institutions; and god-like technology. And it is terrifically dangerous, and it is now approaching a point of crisis overall."

Seems so. 'In general, males generate less robust immune responses and are more susceptible to a variety of infectious agents (23-27). In contrast, females mount stronger innate and adaptive immune responses and are relatively resistant to virus infections (23, 28-30)'

“A sick man only wants one thing; a healthy man wants ten thousand things.”
Nothing like illness to humble us, and awaken us to be grateful, and to value the good there is in living

What is noble is worth sacrificing, yes. However not everyone sees eye to eye, what is noble to one may not be so to another. Suffice to say there is still a general agreement on what being noble is, and that is making sacrifices for the general good and minimizing harm to others

Something that you love, value and cherish is threatened and made vulnerable; it can be family, community and or country, and chaos is around the corner. Noble is the person who make sacrifices and suffers to remove/reduce the chaos to protect the thing he values. That's it.

Indeed a rare word these days, and it's an honorable word. The word that comes to my mind after reading your post is - sacrifice. Why sacrifice certain gratifications? Why pursue justice? Because it's noble and the right thing to do.
