It's important that WebAssembly compilation doesn't block the main thread. The proposals for reducing the boilerplate here would still make it happen in the background.

We're considering having a built-in way to load Wasm modules as ES modules. There's a proposed specification, but I'm not sure if it'd fit together with how tools actually produce Wasm modules (which often requires more initialization steps than just the Wasm/JS API).
