I'm drawn to obscure things & hidden practices in Chinese politics & law. The more I labor on this, the less you have to. PhD from@leidenuniversity, worked@nyu.

Oh, I just realized what might have caused some confusion. By external audience, I do not mean foreign audience, but people outside of the Party Centre.

Also for flexibility. Flexibility matters because it allows one to shift identity as needed. It allows a less representative body to enjoy an unmatched scope of legitimacy. It also helps to shed accountability when necessary.

Mao started to regulate it in the 1950s. I speculate that the rules are more elaborate now but they would of course be kept as top secrets.

No, it's not new. I think pre-1949 it was merely a vernacular term but in later PRC years it has assumed a normative status. I think the vagueness I mentioned is maintained for the external audience. Internally, who has the authority to claim it is clearly defined.

Am sure it helps. Translation of the ๅทฅไฝœ่ง„ๅˆ™ Directive on the Operation of the Central Committee.

Please read 's thread here. It provides important and more elaborate empirical support for what I meant about the strategic ambiguity regarding the identity of the Party Centre.

Last week, the CCP published its Directive of the Operation of Party Central Committee. Before that, the only procedural rules regulating the Central Committee that I know is the one issued in 1938. Here is my take on the new directive (Part I).

Steven Soderbergh featured the Bo-Gu couple in Laundromat. The scene looks so off and comical. Hollywood can recreate stories of Henry V or Westeros and make them believable, but they never do it right with Chinese political characters.

No, I donโ€™t. But I believe all conclusions/speculations would hinge on how intimate/distant you believe the Xi-Wang relation is, when the alliance broke down, if it did, and how.
