Looks like we're gonna hit the goal very quickly. Like way quicker than I expected. Will leave the GoFundMe in place for a while, tho, in order to continue raising money for Austin Pets Alive. I'm astounded, deeply thankful, and really moved by your support. Thank you so much.

Even better reason: all overages are getting donated to Austin Pets Alive!

i know this already made it's goal, but maybe considering tossing in an extra buck or two because these expenditures always wind up being more than we think. also, mad max is an extra thicc prince who we must protect.

Alright. I listened to reason and made a GoFundMe for Mad Max's surgery. If we reach our goal, any overages will be donated to Austin Pets Alive, a local animal charity we've worked with in the past. Got spare change in your sofa? Toss it into this link:

same. every day i live in fear. i love my job, it's not that - it's more just knowing this field is so temporary. and that i don't have a partner to cradle the fall.

I want to talk and write about this all the time, too. Being single and working in/adjacent to media is insanely expensive and precarious.

anyway, my TL;DR point isn't to say "woe is me." i'm not sure what i'm trying to say other than look at the single, unmarried folk in your life and realize they might be struggling even more than they let on. and that maybe WE deserve some songs and culture, too.

i have a family who helped me through a lot of that. with rent and such. i wasn't totally on my own the whole time, i don't want to present it that way. but i was still single. never had someone to foot the dinner bill or utilities. never had that emotional support.

i have a journalism degree. i graduated top of my class. i worked all through college. my senior year, i had a full-time job and three internships on the side. i graduated with $60k worth of debt and haven't put a dent in it. i did everything right. and i failed.

can't tell you how many freelancers or low-income folk in my industry that i've met who are like "at least i'm married!" and... it's hard for me to visualize that. i've been single my entire adult life. imagine footing bills on a freelance income largely on your own. it's hell.

i might just be in my feelings tonight but i keep thinking about what a burden it is to be a single adult person in this economy and how sad i am that we never normalize it.
