Another day, another naive wannabe-CEO thinking the First Amendment is some golden fairy magic that gives you a right to scrape millions of people's faces from private companies like Facebook and Twitter and use them for mass surveillance. twitter.com/CBSThisMorning…

What does @Liquid have to say about Unbound's CASP? "Although the new system has only been in place a short time, Melamed said the results are striking." Read the entire article >>> bit.ly/2RMUpzb

I know that it should stand for secret key, but I use private key. Secret key is for symmetric and I like to distinguish... For signing keys, I actually prefer (sk,vk) for signing and verification. (ek,dk) would be best for encryption, but I respect historical notation.

I am so happy to see people so absolutely sure of the future. It’s a pity that the people really doing this work and science are less sure. But whatever...

How can you be so sure of yourself? That’s absurd. Quantum supremacy as defined is completely irrelevant here. I wouldn’t mind if you conjectured less than 10 years (I conjecture much longer if ever), but to be so unequivocal???

I agree. It’s far from perfect, but I believe that it works well overall. I also don’t think there’s anything better. The main thing is for PC members to be humble and polite, and to put in the hard work they committed to when they joined.

Quoting Tal Rabin when I was in my PhD. If you end up having many other papers accepted then this reject won’t matter. If you don’t then having this accepted won’t have helped. It’s true (but I admit didn’t really cheer me up back then).

Anything else is just subjective and that never changes at rebuttal. Worst or all, I found that the rebuttal period reduced discussion. In the past, most discussion was straight after reviews are opened since it’s fresh. Now everyone waits for rebuttals and much less is discussed

I don’t like the whole rebuttal system. It’s only helpful in cases of an error or prior work and in these cases it can be sent to the authors directly for comment. The policy is simple - any claim of an error or prior work must be sent to the authors.

My favorite story of the 1917 October revolution. A small group of Bolshevik Red Army is casing the telephone office to plan its capture on the day of the coup. The director sees them and demands “are you the armed guards I’ve been asking for?!”
“...yes. Yes we are.”

Clayton Christensen, a well-known professor of business from Harvard, just passed away. I highly recommend reading this article, written by him, which is an incredible tribute to who he was.

There is a big difference between falsifiable and standard, although falsifiable is a good step forward. Of course, standard is subjective. In 2001, my advisor Oded Goldreich did not agree for me to say “standard assumption” for DDH 😊. It’s a different world today!
