Standoff: Police are currently blocking the hunger strikers & their supporters from going to the gate of Government House. They say there isn't enough room. Police say they'll allow 10-12 people, but there are 13 hunger strikers alone & they'd like 50 supporters to accompany them

Great translation of Headliners, starring the inimitable Tsang Chi-ho. Watch the fate of this satirical programme carefully - as George Orwell wrote, every joke is a tiny revolution.

Looked up what powers China has to declare martial law, take over from Hong Kong government etc, in the event of a major crisis. Turns out Article 18 of the Basic Law gives them pretty comprehensively sweeping powers Source:

Watching protesters preparing to face police in Sha Tin this evening: with every protest, protesters learn & improve their ability to resist police, & police use correspondingly increased levels of force to “clear” them. Result is an ever-upwards escalating cycle of violence.

In newly-released secret discussions from after 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, CCP leader Jiang Zemin referred to a surprising comparison. He pointed out: then-gov Ronald Reagan had used force & declared state of emergency to crack down on student protesters in Berkeley CA in 1969.

Arsonists set fire to Fanling during the night. On Lamma Island an assailant beat a man about to write on its Lennon Wall and the wall itself was torn down. The dark underbelly of rises into view.
