For what it's worth, I do not recall Mathew ever saying no one would ever pay for content. To the contrary, he was always interested in/discussing the various content monetization models out there (while being skeptical or against 'velvet ropes' or 'fenced gardens').

Same can be said about ideologies or parties or classes, as in 'the dictatorship of the proletariat.' In fact, most of the world's dictators have been ideologists and/or class worriers who came to power fighting the 'illegitimate' or 'oppressive' (in their minds) governments.
