Imagine there being 3 podcasting apps, and you need to subscribe to all 3 to get 80-100% of the podcasts out there since they're licensed to one of those 3 apps.

Sure, but with the end effect (if successful) of lock-in, as you mentioned. Which is a great business case, but probably net negative for the podcasting world which is quite open now (just an RSS feed).

This looks more to me like a company trying to quickly bootstrap to success on other people's work (eg Joe Rogan). Like many podcasts Joe Rogan is unaffiliated and independent, and he has mentioned he likes to keep it that way.
