Yes, any election tech (any tech in service of the public, really) should be #FOSS, absolutely. But the software was the least problematic thing in the Iowa fiasco; election security starts with making sure the people in charge understand the stakes and are competent and honest.

You're obviously right, but citing "cybersecurity reasons" is 100% disingenuous from the @DNC: if they had hired a *single* real software security professional (instead of a shady firm with ties to candidates), they'd have been told "security through obfuscation" is NOT security.

1/ Tech and #IowaCaucuses:
We now have credible reporting out about the app that wrecked Iowa. This was a preventable disaster caused by willful ignorance about development practices.
Bottom line: The Democratic Party funded their friends rather than following best practices.

Well, this answers your initial question with perfect clarity: you are undeniably part of the problem, and you are choosing to do so by refusing to even consider there may exist things you're not aware of. You may expand your mind some day; or you may not. I hope you will.

I don't pretend to be clairvoyant and this is not at all what I was saying. I think you are misrepresenting my position and acting in bad faith, and should ask yourself why you are doing so.

Yes. Watch how you tend to behave or feel when you go home in the evening and on the sidewalk you pass a group of young, idle-looking, loud-speaking black guys vs. a group of young, idle-looking, loud-speaking white guys. Are your reactions the exact same?

I offered you the courtesy of treating you like a reasonable human being who can think for himself. I would appreciate it if you extended to me the same courtesy.

It has nothing to do with what you have or have not gone through. It only has to do with what you look like. That is, unfortunately, the nature of unconscious racial bias. And it applies even if you are extremely unprivileged in other aspects; it's not either/or.

That means white men and people who pass as white and male. Relax, it's nothing to take offense at.

You didn't do anything, but you are more privileged than other people who didn't do anything either. You unconsciously reproduce behaviours and perpetuate systems that enforce that privilege. That's why it's called systemic. It's on you to become aware of those things.

Agreed, but energy is not infinite, so I'd rather find the most efficient way to accomplish a goal. And I'd rather drag criminals in front of a court of law than treat free software differently from public utilities.

I can be convinced otherwise if there's a Hippocratic legal team that's ready and willing to take those cases... and win them. But I'm not holding my breath.

Because I don't think it will be efficient. I believe that instead it will be largely ignored, and if you try to enforce it you will be dragged into a quagmire of legal subtleties - and the burden is on you and they know their way around law more than you.
