Daughter of Earth, by Agnes Smedley, a political activist and author in the 1930s. I read the book in the 1970s after slogging through Anais Nin's journals. Nin's work discouraged me; I wasn't like her at all. I thought I couldn't be an artist. Smedley's work empowered me.
