Would you ping me in the alumni slack if you have a moment? (I don't actually use twitter, but this is the only place I know where you might check more often than slack)

Oh! Also for German, check out German Uncovered, which is largely based on Krashen's ideas:

Yeah, it's priceless for building confidence. There's actual scientific research about bad accents triggering fight or flight responses in native listeners, too. Fascinating stuff.

Totally get it as an audio book. No diagrams and graphs that I can recall.

One more thing: if you decide to use italki tutors, I would recommend aiming for 10 different lessons with 10 different tutors in the first few weeks. That way if you have 10 crappy lessons, you still win, rather than "failing to find the perfect tutor".

Lastly, if you are the type who benefits from a supportive community, check out the Add1Challenge . I personally don't think that speaking early is necessary or even desirable, but the community aspect is stellar.

And another variation on the idea of skipping individual words:

Back to the pronunciation thing. It's not just the sounds. Something that will make you sound awkward is rhythm and intonation. Idahosa Ness, again:

And here's a fascinating case study of a linguistics professor who used Krashen's ideas exclusively to learn conversational Arabic in one year, with no vocabulary or grammar study:

Lastly, check out the concept of comprehensible input by Stephen Krashen. Here's an interview that I really enjoyed:

If the Mimic Method doesn't support your language, you can reverse engineer something for yourself using this article (see the full case study, it's fascinating).

I highly recommend that you go down the pronunciation rabbit hole as early as possible, because it makes it a bajillion times easier to actually hear and therefore remember and acquire your target language. And native speakers won't switch to English when you try to talk to them.

I would *highly* recommend starting with pronunciation per Gabe's suggestion, both using his trainers, and (if your language is supported) the Mimic Method by Idahosa Ness

For a much more effective process skip individual words and grammar books etc, and go straight to using his revised technique described in this guide:

Check out then if you like what you hear, read his book . Read it mostly for how memory works, not for the specific method (though that works too).

If you do find a source I’d love to hear it. It would be nice to refer to something real rather than napkin math.
