If I haven't publicly declared my love for Terry Pratchett, please allow me to do so now. I'm five books deep in the Discworld series and I lowkey kinda want to become a fantasy writer now

I did my dissertation writing in the mornings, so it felt like I was making progress every day. Having people to write with, provided that they are not distracting, helps a lot. Also just keep rolling with whatever works. I listed to the same playlists over and over while writing

and I work together on our application materials. Having someone read through your stuff on a regular basis makes it a lot better, but it's also a way for you to get emotional support during the process.

The big thing I would say is to stay off of social media. You get to see everyone's successes, and that always feels so overwhelming to me when I'm uncertain about my future. I'd recommend dividing your time between diss writing and applying for jobs.

My favorite thing as I approach finishing a manuscript draft is to grab the topic sentences into a new document to make sure they form a linear story arc AND that individually they are not overly long & complex!

Are your students struggling at this point in the semester? Yesterday I had my students write a general note of encouragement, gathered them in, shuffled them, and redistributed them. Everyone got a little lift from someone who's also right there.
