NYT endorses two candidates with two completely different worldviews. Apparently in an effort to render the endorsement meaningless.

6/ Whether the regime will topple soon is anyone's guess (and I totally agree with Wood that much regime change "analysis" is just the speakers stating their desire). But I think there's ample signs that popular anger at the regime goes far beyond elites. (End)

5/ The Islamists were always hostile to elites and intellectuals. But their most resonant message was always the defense of the the downtrodden (mostaz'afin). But the Islamists have now failed miserably at it. Hence the unmitigated rage of the poor.

4/ It's not hard to see why. Everyone is suffering, but the misery of the lower-classes is horrendous. They can't feed their kids, but see money going to IRI proxies. And they now see, thanks to social media, how the princelings live. The regime's longstanding ruse is up.

3/ If 2009 was about "where's my vote?" (a message that concedes the core legitimacy of the IRI), the more recent protests are about "death to the dictator" and "reformist, hardliner, it's game over" (messages which, obviously, do not.)

2/ The 2017 & 2019 protesters have largely been the poorest segments of society. Tehran has been quiet relative to towns/villages we have to search for on the map, many in conservative corners of the country. And the protesters' msg has been more radical than earlier protests.

1/ I'm a big fan (you should all read "The Way of the Strangers") and this piece is very thoughtful. But its premise, that a desire for regime change in Iran is "elite opinion", is faulty.

In , I offer my take on intersectionality. In short, it doesn't describe reality very well, it ignores intra-identity suffering, and it creates a harmful social incentive structure on elite college campuses, where it dominates the culture.

There was also a regime apologist on with us. Pro tip: if you want to identify a regime sympathizer, ask them point blank if they want the Islamic Republic to stay or go. If they say, as this guy does, "it's not my place to say", you have your answer.

This thread is very good 👇 My wife -- who can be productive even in a 5 minute window (but whose projects don't typically involve writing & argument) -- can't understand why I don't use little pockets of time to be productive with my tasks. This heuristic helps explain it.

I assume will be tweeting up a storm, expressing his disgust with Zarif's shit-eating grin right after his government blew a plane full of civilians out of the sky. Because otherwise he'd be a total regime shill, no?

Remember when IRI’s fake lobby in DC was screaming/crying after his death, when Pompeo posed in a pic w/ MBS smiling?! MBS - 1 Zarif - 176
