If sounds too good to be true, then it is. There's No Such Thing As A Free Lunch. ()

There is nothing more effective to get people to stop thinking critically than the promise of a large and quick financial return.

The problem - and this goes beyond VC - is that people lose their minds once they see $ or even the promise of a large return. If you aren't willing to think critically about an investment, then there are many people willing to take your money.

Some startups are nothing more than smoke and mirrors trying to steal money from VCs. Here's a takedown of one example.

Props to for doing her best to keep big tech companies honest (in this case Apple).

Good point. The problem with current approaches to machine learning is that models usually prioritize the optimal (nearest) recommendation.

For example, people don't want the most accurate medical diagnosis. They want an optimistic portrayal of their condition that gives them and their family hope.

The "scenic route" problem of AI: many times, people don't want the computer-calculated optimal recommendation. They want a decision that accounts for factors not quantified by the model, like the beauty of the scenery along a route.

Google Lens allows you to translate text in real-time, quickly convert book pages to computer text, search for info on local landmarks, and auto-add events to a calendar (among other tasks).

Commitment device: a system you put in place to force yourself to do something you need to (or not to do something you shouldn't do). Because you really don't have as much self-control as you think you do.

If anyone wants a good place to hunker down until this emergency blows over, there are still some great old missile silos for sale in Arizona.

At the CVS this morning. Good thing I bought that old missile silo as an apocalypse bunker.

Yes, it's only one anecdote, but, like 99% of my interactions with people, it reinforced my belief that humans are inherently good to each other.

Before I could even gather my thoughts to thank him, he turned and disappeared into the crowd, just another incredible New Yorker going out of his way to make a total stranger's day better.

This is my $150 smartwatch. Today, it fell off my wrist while I was running in Manhattan without my noticing. 20 blocks later when I stopped at a light, I was tapped on the shoulder by a man who had run after me for a mile to return my watch!

Bit of philosophy to end the week: When I was younger, I tried to talk to the smartest/wealthiest people to learn from them. Now, I try to talk to the happiest people because it's a lot harder and rarer to be happy than wealthy or smart.

People who live in Iowa: what's it like the day after the caucuses when your state ceases to exist for 4 years?

Just realized that the big sporting event for today everyone's been talking about is not the Australian Open men's final, but a silly sport the Americans call football. I will never understand this country.
