I also like(slightly modified)-“would you rather have your employees(residents) love you or fear you?” “Both. I want them to fear how much they love me.” ~Michael Scott, Dunder Mifflin

Agree. See where the conversation goes instead of sticking to a script. Ask about previous jobs outside of medicine. I have heard some very interesting ones. Sometimes provides character insight. Do not ask where else they are interviewing or try to compare programs. No need

I completely support PROs as an endpoint but have to wonder if placebo effect confounds this at all. Sham hyperbaric would have been an interesting control arm.

I agree... I think both ultimately needed. We have a supply to contract is the challenge we all need to engage. SOAP is a small step. If nobody is SOAPing non-rad onc applicants then only ~150 positions filled this year. Would be similar to 2008 levels?

If there are PDs on the fence or feeling pressure to fill, this should provide some solidarity and support for them to make the right choice given the current environment. No doubt, bigger solutions need to follow (3)

Main point: If programs participate in the SOAP (we are not) they should take candidates with demonstrable rad onc interest (rotation and LOR?) not candidates failing to match other specialties (low bar). Small step to market correction but very achievable in the short term(2/)

Sounds like many are on board with this idea so it’s going to happen. Let me know who is interested in writing/signing if you haven’t already. Will solicit all PDs soon for co-signing after complete.Needs a home in print before March(1/)

Totally agree. We have more faculty than residents at UC but we are committed to an apprenticeship model (1-1). Therefore everyone including our chair has several months without residents. We don’t need to have residents but residents do need to have jobs. 👍

A no post match communication policy in IJROBP was signed before. Similarly, We should endorse this publicly as well( again low bar). It won’t fix but will help the numbers imbalance. resident employment is absolutely a priority and this will help. Ready to sign!

I’m hopeful we will match 2 quality candidates this year. If we don’t fill a slot, we will NOT take a candidate in the SOAP without prior Rad onc interest (ie no rotation) for the sake of filling slots. We (PDs and chairs) should be able to commit to this publicly. Low bar IMO

My former co-resident described this to me many years ago and then I experienced myself. The whole process is arduous and the void of “nothing on the horizon” is strange once board certified with a job... but the other side is worth it!

our nature is to be anxious about the next step (high school- college-medschool- match-job search-board cert). legitimate concerns about the job search are amplified by feelings of no control and randomness. Once complete there is a “what now ?” feeling expressed by many.

Nice welcome back to “The Office” from the residents. I respect the commitment but this means war. Extra compliance modules?

My son reading the Red Journal. Try explaining total skin electron treatments to a 5 yr old. “I’m going to try these at bath time!” 😂😂🤷‍♂️
