No specific mention of applied cryptography as a topic of interest?

I’m with on this. And I’ve not given up just yet. I think it’s healthier for the crypto community if the best applied papers are visible at AC/C/EC and not dispersed across a bunch of sec confs.

Great to hear about a positive experience. I believe most PC members are absolutely sincere and hard-working - it’s a tough job to wade through 20 or more lots of 30 pages!

Duh, sorry! So, to be frank, I sent the paper to EC partly as a test: I wanted to see how the PC would react to applied work that’s entirely in scope according to the CFP. Badly, as it turns out! Q now is how far I want to push this...

Yeah, I guess. In all sincerity, please skim the paper (eprint 2020/065) and let me know. I know it’s not a traditional topic for EC (API design, deploying new code in a crypto library, etc). Maybe all we did was some useful “crypto engineering”?

You’re right of course. I contend, however, that the Eurocrypt CFP’s language meant my paper was definitely in scope despite the self-admitted lack of purely scientific novelty: “Original research papers on all technical aspects of cryptology are solicited for submission.”

Well my rejected paper was regarded as lacking any novelty, though apparently novel enough for OpenSSL to update their primality testing for the first time in 20 years!
